A Blind Audition from Monday night’s new episode of The Voice Season 28 has some people arguing that Carson Daly chose the wrong artist to award his new Carson Callback privilege. Justin Jenks had the coaches regretting their decision not to turn for him.
Did The Voice‘s Justin Jenks Deserve the Carson Callback?
For those who might not know, Season 28 of The Voice introduced a new twist called the “Carson Callback,” which allows the show’s longtime host Carson Daly to choose a singer who received zero chair turns from the coaches in their Blind Audition to come back and try again.
Daly used the Carson Callback in the season premiere, inviting Ryan Mitchell to return to the stage for another try. It was a success, as coach Reba McEntire turned around to get Ryan on her team. But did Daly play the card too early in the season?
That’s what some people think after hearing Justin Jenks’ Blind Audition in this Monday’s new episode. Justin performed “Sex & Candy” by Marcy Playground, showing off an impressive vocal range. The coaches seemed to enjoy the performance, but none of them turned their chairs.
When they finally saw Justin, they were stunned. Michael Bublé and Niall Horan said they thought they were listening to a duet by a man and a woman. Snoop Dogg asked Justin to sing something to prove it was really his voice.
“What was I thinking?” Horan asked himself after realizing whose voice he had been listening to. Bublé encouraged Justin to return to the show, telling him, “Today, there just happened to be an idiot sitting in my seat.”
In an article for Cinema Blend, writer Heidi Venable argued that Daly’s Carson Callback should have gone to Justin, and there are comments echoing that sentiment in the official YouTube video of Justin’s performance.
Both Venable and several commenters also argued that the Coach Replay button should return to the show. This past feature gave The Voice coaches a chance to change their mind about an artist they failed to turn for. This would have been the perfect opportunity for one of the coaches to use it.
What do you think? Did Daly use his Carson Callback too early? Should the Coach Replay return? Let us know in the comments below.
