Who is Angelica Hale?
Angelica Hale rose to fame on America’s Got Talent Season 12. On the show, Hale sang Andra Day’s “Rise Up.” Her rendition of the song stunned the judges so much that Howie Mandel hit the Golden Buzzer for the 12 year old singer.
During her audition, Hale shared that she, at only 4 years old, contracted aggressive strep bacteria in her lungs. After only a week, her illness turned to double pneumonia. During her first two nights in the hospital, she went septic. Hale experienced multiple organ failures, with her kidneys scarred and no longer functioning. She was put on a ventilator, then an oscillator to try and keep her oxygen levels up. The singer also underwent multiple blood and platelet transfusions. She then was life flighted to a hospital with a ECMO machine. She was on this machine for 12 days.
Hale spent 80 days in the hospital from Feb. 2 to Apr. 24, 2012, and about 6 weeks in the PICU. She then had to have multiple types of dialysis since her kidneys had failed. Eventually, Hale’s parents both got tested to see if they would be a match for her. Her father was not a match, while her mother was. Her mother donated her kidney to her on Friday, September 13th, 2013 when she was 6 years old.
Hale finished her season of America’s Got Talent in second place, behind ventriloquist Darci Lynne Farmer. She later returned for AGT: The Champions, where she received another Golden Buzzer from Howie Mandel.
