American Idol Season 21 returned on Sunday night for a new episode that ended on an emotional cliffhanger. The judges invited a singer back to audition again in next week’s show, so we still don’t know whether she’ll make it to Hollywood.
American Idol Episode Ends on a Cliffhanger
At the end of Sunday night’s episode, a singer who calls herself Fire auditioned for the judges. She brought her young daughter with her, sharing that she had her at 18 years old. Fire had a difficult childhood, as she was placed into state custody due to her mother’s drug problem.
For her audition, Fire performed “Talking to the Moon” by Bruno Mars. Judge Lionel Richie told her that she needs to be pushed more, and Katy Perry asked her to try parts of the song again without going into a falsetto. Unfortunately, the panel didn’t give Fire a Golden Ticket to Hollywood.
Fire teared up as Perry shared some encouraging words with her. When the singer’s daughter brought a Golden Ticket over to her, Fire told her to put it back. That’s when Perry surprised her by offering to let her audition again in Nashville.
We’ll see Fire’s second audition in next week’s episode. She apparently had a month to prepare before trying again. After next week’s episode, the show will be moving on to the infamous Hollywood Week.

Singer Gets to Perform with Noah Thompson, HunterGirl
Fire wasn’t the only auditioning singer who got a surprise from the judges on Sunday’s episode. The show began with an audition from Mariah Faith, who shared that her beloved stepdad passed away a few years ago.
Mariah performed “Whenever You Come Around” by Vince Gill. Perry told her that she thought she was playing it safe and suggested she should sing “I Can’t Make You Love Me” by Bonnie Raitt. After this second performance, judge Luke Bryan said he had chills.
Perry said Mariah has “one of the most interesting voices this season.” Not only did the judges give her a Golden Ticket to Hollywood, but they also invited her to open for last year’s winner and runner-up Noah Thompson and HunterGirl at their Nashville show.
