Julianne, Derek Hough’s Relationship Got a ‘Clean Slate’
In December of last year, Derek’s wife Hayley Erbert underwent an emergency craniectomy after she was hospitalized for a cranial hematoma. Julianne told People about how her relationship with her brother changed as she supported him through the difficult time.
“Something happens and it just is like a clean slate,” Hough said. “Especially with what just happened with Derek and Haley, there could have been little things just kind of looming or lingering in the background, but when you’re left with life-or-death situations, nothing else matters.”
She added that “little things of competition” between her and her brother weren’t there anymore. Julianne went on to say that she’s “blessed” to have her family, even if they don’t always see eye to eye on everything.
“When something tragic happens or something really hard or something where somebody needs you … It makes you realize that as humans, as people on this planet, we really do care so much,” Julianne shared.

What Are the Houghs Up to Lately?
Both Derek and Julianne are keeping busy. Earlier this year, Derek finished up his Symphony of Dance tour, which had to be rescheduled due to Erbert’s health issues. Erbert joined him to perform on the rescheduled dates.
Recently, Derek announced that he’s heading out on his first holiday tour later this year. Tickets are available for fans to buy now. It’s not clear at this time whether Erbert will be involved in the new tour. Derek will also be returning as a judge on DWTS this fall.
Meanwhile, Julianne is preparing to release her first novel, titled Everything We Never Knew, co-written with author Ellen Goodlett. The book, which is about a woman who can feel other people’s emotions, will be out on August 13.
