Why ‘Masked Singer’ Winner T-Pain Thought He Would Be The First To Go

The Masked Singer came to a close earlier this week, with T-Pain revealed to be The Monster and crowned the season winner. However, as T-Pain shared with Ellen DeGeneres in a new interview, he never expected to make it to the end.

T-Pain said he chose the “silliest-looking” costume because he didn’t think he would last very long. “I thought I was gonna be gone on the first episode because I have a real distinct voice,” he said. “So I felt like, if I’m gonna embarrass myself, I might as well just take it to the highest level.”

It’s interesting that T-Pain says his voice is recognizable. While Talent Recap (and plenty of people online) guessed that he was The Monster, the judges never figured it out. As Ellen points out, this is probably because people are so used to hearing his voice with auto-tune. She added that his real voice is “amazing.”

However, T-Pain says that he often gets recognized for his speaking voice. When he goes to restaurants with his wife, he says people often turn around when they hear him speak, wondering, “Is that T-Pain back there?” It’s a good thing his speaking voice was disguised on the show, although he says “everybody” he knew figured out it was him.

As far as the comfort of the Monster costume goes, T-Pain says he “didn’t think it through,” explaining, “It was hot.” He says he was originally supposed to have a fan inside, but it made too much noise and had to be taken away. He thinks it was the “worst costume to be in for that long.”

However, wearing it was something of a dream come true for him, since he’s always wondered what it was like for theme park performers to wear them. The other thing he’s always wondered is what’s in a clown’s suitcase. With any luck, that will be the subject of the next big celebrity talent show.
