Will ‘American Song Contest’ Return in 2023? Or Will ‘The Voice’ Take its Place?
American Song Contest Season 2 is currently still under negotiations at this time. With the network’s decision still on the table, many believe that The Voice may return to its two-seasons a year format this spring.
American Song Contest Renewal is Still Uncertain
NBC’s most recent winter/spring scheduling was unlike years past. Instead of airing another season of The Voice, two shows took it’s time slot before America’s Got Talent‘s June premiere.
Staging its debut in 2021 with Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dogg as hosts, American Song Contest was definitely a refreshing show for the nation’s talent competition fans. NBC television network introduced the show as an eight week series of musical acts. Essentially, the show brought together 56 aspiring victors, representing 50 states, five U.S. territories, and the nation’s capital.
American Song Contest asks singers to create their own single and battle it out for the title of “America’s next hit song.” Spiraling in broad range of music genres, the show brings in rising artists and legendary icons. At the end of the season, AleXa of Washington D.C. was crowned as the first ever winner of the series with her song “Wonderland.”
The show aired from March 21 to May 9, garnering both support and criticism. Apparently, NBC seems uncertain whether the show deserves another go signal. Recently it was reported that the show is still in negotiations at the network.
“We are still negotiating and it is, as always, about money,” expressed Christer Björkman, the owner of the show’s rights.
American Song Contest probably failed to satisfy the hype that executives of NBC have set. In the span of the live competition, the show proved unsuccessful in attaining exemplary ratings. In comparison with other musical reality shows like The Voice and American Idol, ASC lacked viewer interest, with the highest number of views at only 2.9 million according to TV Series Finale.
Fans Remain Hopeful for The Show’s Return
Despite doubts in the renewal, fans have crossed their fingers for another American Song Contest to air in the television. Fans on Reddit remain hopeful that the show will be renewed by NBC. Some agreed that the formula of the program needs to be changed if the show wants to be more appealing to audiences.
While skeptic about NBC, a fellow Reddit user is hopeful that the network recognizes that this show needs work. Meanwhile, another sees the negotiation as a “good sign” and an “actual chance” towards season 2.
The Voice Might Come Back in Replacement of American Song Contest
Amid possible cancellation of ASC, speculations regarding The Voice’s possible return in spring 2023 arose. It’s no secret that The Voice has been NBC’s most popular singing competition. Additionally, some details posted by The Voice Official Casting Site had provided hints pointing to the launch of another cycle.
The casting site states that selected participants must be willing to travel to and reside at one or more undisclosed locations in the United States for several weeks at any time in October 2022 and May 2023.
Before the show’s new one season with a year format, their spring season was generally cemented until May. Thus, many believe that the dates provided suggests a spring season for The Voice. Many believe the spring season will go through the live shows and finale in the month of May.
Official announcements have not been made yet. However, the public may expect one in the coming weeks. In the meantime, The Voice Season 22 returns this September 19 on NBC.
