Why ‘American Idol’s Emmy Russell Was ‘Mad’ About Singing Grandma Loretta Lynn’s Song

American Idol Season 22 contestant Emmy Russell recently opened up about performing her grandmother Loretta Lynn’s iconic song “Coal Miner’s Daughter” on the show last year. As it turns out, Russell was initially “mad” about the song choice.
Emmy Russell on Singing Loretta Lynn’s Song on American Idol
Russell was a guest on a recent episode of The Thrivalist Podcast, where she talked about her experience performing her grandmother Loretta Lynn’s song “Coal Miner’s Daughter” in the Top 8 of American Idol Season 22.
It wasn’t Russell’s idea to perform the song. During the Judges’ Song Contest, each of the three judges (Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan) chose a song for Russell to potentially sing. Russell explained that out of the three songs chosen for her, “Coal Miner’s Daughter” was the only one she knew.
“I just remember seeing that and I was so mad,” Russell recalled, explaining that she didn’t want it to “add to” the idea that she was on the show because of nepotism. However, she accepted the challenge and had “an entire vision” for how to perform the song on the piano.
Russell was asked to guess which of the three judges chose the song for her. She correctly guessed that it was Katy Perry, who tearfully told her, “I chose this song not because Loretta Lynn is your grandma. I chose this song because you are Emmy Russell, and you can do anything now as Emmy Russell.”

Russell Recently Welcomed a Baby Daughter
Russell and her husband, fellow singer Tyler Ward, recently welcomed their first child together, a baby daughter. The singer faced some complications from the birth and had to remain in the hospital for a blood transfusion.
A few days later, Russell shared an update with fans, explaining that she “had to get two full bags of blood” after apparently losing 1.6 liters. She said she was “having mental breakdowns, like, every five seconds” as she struggled with breastfeeding and wasn’t able to spend much time with her baby.
Russell said that Ward was “a trooper” as he got “so hands on” with taking care of their daughter while she recovered. The couple has not yet shared the baby’s name with fans.
