Who Is Grace Kinstler And Why Is She Making ‘American Idol’ Judges Cry?

This season on American Idol, one talented singer is going to make the judges cry with her talent. Her name is Grace Kinstler, and she’s one of the hopefuls competing on Season 19 of the talent show this year.


Grace has over 13,000 followers on Instagram, and has been posting about her upcoming appearance on Idol. Read on to find out more about this talented young singer before you watch her audition this season.

Who Is Grace Kinstler On ‘American Idol’?

Grace Kinstler is a 20-year-old singer/songwriter from the Chicago area. She’s currently studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 2016, Grace won first place in the “Musical Theatre High School” category of a national vocal competition.

She’s also appeared in several musicals, including a production of Big Fish. She even tried out for The Voice when she was younger. Here’s hoping she has more luck on American Idol.

Grace also writes her own music, and told local news in 2016 that she wants her songs to have a “message.” She added that she hears a lot of music about “sex, drugs, or alcohol,” and said, “I have this idea that I want to change the standard of what music is and go back to storytelling.”

The young singer has released several EPs, most recently one called Lavender in 2019. She also has a YouTube channel and a TikTok account, where she posts videos of herself performing covers of popular songs.


Grace’s boyfriend, Joseph Wheatley, is also involved in music. He’s a beatboxer, and has collaborated with Grace for performances. Last year, they teamed up for a performance of “Scars” by Sam Smith.

Grace Made The ‘Idol’ Judges Cry

In one of the preview clips for this season of American Idol, Grace can be seen singing the song “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” during her audition. Judge Katy Perry is then shown wiping away tears, while Luke Bryan tells Grace, “This is the first time that just someone singing made me cry.”

On Instagram, Grace replied to a comment about Luke crying, writing, “I just about cried when that happened.” She called it “an honor” that her talent was able to bring the country star to tears.
