‘The Voice UK’ Contestant Wows Jessie J
Before his audition, Ash shared that he was from Wales, and that he worked with special needs children. He said he was nervous, as he doesn’t perform much. Ash added that it was “liberating” to be judged only on his voice and not his appearance.
As soon as Ash started singing, Jessie J looked excited. It didn’t take long for her to hit her button and turn around. A moment later, she got out of her chair and sat on the steps of the stage, staring up at Ash as he continued to sing.
Danny O’Donoghue was the second coach to turn around, saying, “I have to see this.” He encouraged the other two coaches, Tom Jones and Will.i.am, to join him. Eventually, all four coaches turned around for Ash.
After his performance, the audience gave Ash a standing ovation, and Jessie gave him a hug.
“Well done,” she told him. “That was amazing.”
What Did The Judges Think Of Ash’s Performance?
Ash connected with Welsh singer Tom Jones, while Danny O’Donoghue called him “an exceptional singer.” Will.i.am said he was “spectacular,” and that he performed with “passion.”
“I believe you’re singing for something,” Will.i.am continued. “You represent all the teachers out there, all the people that care for kids. And you’re double talented. Double blessed. Your heart is as big as your voice.”
Meanwhile, Jessie told him she wanted to be “front row” for his performance, and made a passionate case to have Ash on her team. It must have worked, because Ash chose her as his coach.
Ash made it to the semifinals of The Voice UK Season 2 in 2013. Last year, Ash expressed shock on Instagram that his audition had over 40 million views, saying it was the highest-viewed Voice UK audition ever. He’s since released a studio version of the cover, and recently put out an album called Empire Falls.
