The Voice will be giving the spotlight to Broadway star Alex Newell during next week’s show. Monday’s episode will feature a performance from Newell, who stars in the musical Shucked and is nominated for a Tony Award this year.
Alex Newell of Shucked to Perform on The Voice
According to Variety, Newell’s upcoming appearance will mark the first performance of a song from a currently running Broadway production on The Voice. The star will be performing the song “Independently Owned.”
Newell is Tony-nominated for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for their performance in Shucked. They’re one of the first openly non-binary Tony nominees, along with this year’s Best Actor in a Musical nominee J. Harrison Ghee from Some Like It Hot.
“We have always imagined ‘The Voice’ as a platform to foster talent while being relevant and of-the-moment,” Melissa Watkins Trueblood, the show’s head of talent, said in a statement. “It is a joy to have such a phenomenal talent as Alex Newell on the show and get to play a role in this journey for ‘Shucked.’”

Will the Tony Awards Go on Next Month?
According to Variety, Newell’s performance on The Voice was booked when it appeared that the Tony Awards would not be broadcast this year due to the ongoing writers’ strike. However, the awards telecast is looking more likely now.
The Writers Guild of America denied a request for a strike waiver from the Tonys producers. Then on Monday, it was reported that the Tonys had altered the ceremony to conform with the WGA’s requests. Because of this, the WGA reportedly no longer plans to picket the show.
The Tonys are scheduled to take place June 11, with last year’s host Ariana DeBose returning. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the event will move forward with an unscripted broadcast on CBS.
