New FOX singing competition Alter Ego returns with another episode on Wednesday night, and we’re officially moving into the “Head-to-Heads” after finishing up the auditions.
The series uses modern motion-capture technology to put a new spin on the classic talent show format, as singers perform as avatars, or Alter Egos. The original 20 contestants have been narrowed down to 16.
What to Expect as the ‘Alter Ego’ Head-to-Heads Begin
Throughout the auditions, host Rocsi Diaz made it clear that contestants who made it through would go on to compete in the “Head-to-Heads.” However, the show hasn’t given many details about exactly what this round entails.
What we do know is that only four of the remaining 16 contestants will perform during Wednesday night’s new episode. The singers who are chosen to move on will get to compete in the Semifinals later this season.
Based on the name of the round, the first thing that comes to mind is the Battle round on The Voice. The Alter Ego Instagram account even teased “a new kind of battle” ahead of Wednesday’s episode. For those who don’t know, the Battles involve two singers performing a duet, with only one moving on.
However, since only four contestants are performing, the Head-to-Heads might be more comparable to the Knockouts. In that case, we’d see each of the two singers deliver their own performance, with the judges and/or audience comparing them against each other.
Alter Ego has aired four episodes so far, all featuring auditions from new artists. One contestant has been eliminated per episode, with the results decided by both audience vote and the judges’ saves. The panel features Will.i.am, Alanis Morissette, Grimes, and Nick Lachey.
We’ve seen some incredible vocalists, as well as some pretty cool digital avatars. Singers have had moving tattoos, lasers coming out of their eyes, and even wings that appear to lift them off the stage. However, the judges haven’t always made the best decisions about who should move on.
In one episode, the panel admitted that they regretted sending The Dawn Majesty home. The singer had a powerhouse voice, which she showed off in her exit performance. Here’s hoping they make better choices going forward.
