‘Alter Ego’ Recap: Auditions Wrap Up as One Contestant Literally Soars

On Wednesday night, FOX’s new singing competition Alter Ego returned with the final five auditions. The series, hosted by Rocsi Diaz, uses modern motion-capture technology to put a totally new spin on the classic talent show format.

The show’s contestants design their own avatar or “Alter Ego.” They control the avatar’s movements from backstage while they perform. The winner of this season will receive $100,000, as well as the mentorship of the show’s celebrity judges — Alanis Morissette, Grimes, Nick Lachey, and Will.i.am.

Tonight’s episode marked the last of the auditions, as the final four contestants made it through to the head-to-head round. The Alter Egos delivered some seriously impressive performances, as well as some amazing tricks. One singer even lifted off the ground!

Fern Literally Soars Through Her ‘Alter Ego’ Audition

Tonight’s episode featured one of the most unique performances of the season, from a performer named Fern, aka Mia Cherise Hall. Fern is designed to look like a fairy, with moving wings and sparkles coming out of her hands. But the most jaw-dropping moment came when she literally lifted off the stage and flew.

Fern also happens to have an ethereally beautiful voice that perfectly matches her magical persona. She performed “Love Me Like You Do” by Ellie Goulding, showing off a sweet tone that soared to new heights (pun intended) as the song went on.

Fern’s true identity, Mia, is 18 years old. She shared that she has Tourette syndrome, and she wants to be a role model to other young people like her, since she didn’t grow up seeing people like herself in the media. The judges voted to put her on the coveted diamond, but soon replaced her with Siren, aka Mama Yaya.

Phoenix Embers is Finally Pursuing Her Dream of Singing

Thirty-nine-year-old TikTok star and stay-at-home mom of three Danielle Cetani was the final singer to perform tonight, as her Alter Ego Phoenix Embers. She shared that she’s never pursued singing because she didn’t think it was realistic, but she’s proving that it’s never too late to chase your dreams.

Phoenix performed “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” by Pat Benatar for her audition. Her avatar’s flaming pink hair was the perfect choice, because her performance was on fire. It inspired Will.i.am to stand up before she was even done singing. The other judges soon followed.

Although the judges didn’t vote to replace Siren on the diamond, Grimes shared that she thought Phoenix had one of the strongest performances of the night. We’re excited to see what she does next.

Who Was Eliminated During Tonight’s Show?

Siren, aka Mama Yaya, finished the night on the coveted diamond for her bluesy performance of “I Put a Spell on You,” so she went straight to the next round thanks to the judges. The Alter Ego audience had the opportunity to save two contestants from elimination during Wednesday’s episode, while the judges could save one.

Phoenix Embers and Fern were chosen by the audience to move on, while the judges chose to save Orlando DeVille, aka Chase Padgett. That means that Wylie, aka Milton Patton, was eliminated. He revealed his true identity to the judges, singing “Check Yes or No” by George Strait. Unfortunately for him, the judges checked “no.”

What do you think of the judges’ decision? Did you notice that the night’s only two male contestants were in the bottom? Do you think women are dominating the competition? Let us know in the comments.
