Dance has finally returned to FOX. The highly anticipated season 17 of So You Think You Can Dance premieres on May 18. Here’s what to expect in the upcoming season.

So You Think You Can Dance returns to FOX after a three year hiatus due to COVID-19. The beloved series is returning to the network with a bit of a change to their loved and known format. With the revival of the series, came the replacement of longtime judges, Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy. JoJo Siwa, Stephen “tWitch” Boss, and Matthew Morrison are the new judges of the upcoming season. Beloved host Cat Deeley has reprised her role this season.

It’s official, this series returns on FOX on May 18. After the three year hiatus, fans are thrilled to see the new season advertised as “back and better than ever.” This season features skilled dancers between the ages of 18 and 30. The dancers will perform in several styles including contemporary, tap, hip-hop, and more. Dancers selected will then move on to the studio and work with world-renowned choreographers. They will complete in weekly dances with new challenges and twists introduced throughout the season.

So You Think You Can Dance Season 17 Introduction Features the Judges

The first episode of the new series is set to include an introduction featuring the new judges. On May 17, So You Think You Can Dance uploaded this introduction to YouTube. Within the video, the three judges alongside dancers from across the country in a choreographed routine.

As usual, the choreographed dance features up and coming dancers from all around America. FOX urged dancers of all kinds to audition for the series revival earlier this year. This year, auditions were held in New York City, Los Angeles and New Orleans.

Differing from past So You Think You Can Dance introductions, season 17 marks the first time that all three judges are dancing together on the show. Even though judges and choreographers have been seen in previous cameos, this preview has made it clear that the new judges are ready to make their mark on the series.

Ahead of the season, Siwa acknowledged that she attempts to be the technical judge of the three, while tWitch brings leadership and Morrison brings his background of musical theater. The dancer has previously explained that a lot of things changed with the coronavirus pandemic, so the series has evolved as well.

So You Think You Can Dance returns to FOX immediately following The Masked Singer season seven finale. The dance series premieres on Wednesday, May 18 at 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT. This series can be streamed on Sling TV, FuboTV, Hulu With Live TV, YouTube TV, and DirecTV Stream.
