Singer Surprises Simon Cowell with Huge Vocal Range on ‘America’s Got Talent’

From the second Donovan stepped out onto the America’s Got Talent stage, Simon Cowell had major doubts. It’s like Cowell has something against people who only have a one-word artist name. Madonna and Björk seem to be doing just fine. After hearing him sing, it became apparent that Donovan could be the next huge one-name artist.
Donovan Takes on Huge Opera Hit on ‘America’s Got Talent’
Donovan told the judges that his dream is to be a Broadway performer. We already saw theater lover Tory Vagasy perform in front of the judges last week. Her performance of “Into the Uknown” led the judges to mixed reviews. Tory was put through to the next round despite Howie Mandel’s grumpiness. She has a huge fan in Cowell though. Donovan might just be her biggest competition so far.
“Think of Me” from The Phantom of the Opera is a very hard song to sing for those who are not experienced performers. The note at the end is pretty iconic and has been butchered by so many artists in the past. Donovan slayed the entire song. His vocal range is completely unexpected but that is what America’s Got Talent is all about. Cowell turned from a major doubter into a total believer.
The judges all gave Donovan a standing ovation. Cowell is always quick to realize when he is wrong and when he has a star right in front of him. Donovan’s vocal training and theater experience became very apparent from the way he commanded the stage.
“I think this is really cool and I think if someone is smart they’d put you in the right part in the right musical because you have an amazing voice,” Cowell said after the performance.
Donovan was put through to the next round of the competition. Cowell thinks America’s Got Talent is the perfect place for him to be. This could very well be his big break onto the Broadway stages.
