Our favorite judge isn’t quitting anytime soon. Simon Cowell is set to judge the new musical game show Walk the Line. The show’s format is co-produced and developed by Cowell’s Syco Entertainment. The six-part series will debut on ITV and its corresponding streaming service later this year. ITV Studios is also behind hits like Love Island and I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!
What is Walk the Line?
On this multi-part series, musical acts will take the stage to perform for the audience and panel of judges. The top two performers of the evening will then face a big decision in their bid to be the reigning champion. They can either go home with a cash prize or “walk the line” and continue to play. If they manage to stay on top of the leaderboard, they will advance to the next show, battling a different set of performers.
The longer the performers last in the competition, the larger the prize. The end of each show will feature a high stakes “stay or play” moment. Each night the current champion will be made an even higher cash out prize.
It seems like Cowell is excited to take on the role in the U.K. based series:
“I am thrilled to be working with Lifted Entertainment and ITV on this new project,” Cowell said to Variety. “We wanted to develop a show which will give the contestants a life-changing cash prize if they win. Each show there will be a champion who must make a vital decision: either cash out then and there or stay in the contest to compete again the following night and have a chance to claim the huge prize. It’s the kind of decision that will have viewers on the edge of their seats – real event TV. I’m very excited at giving musical talent the opportunity to transform their lives like never before.”
Is Cowell’s New Show an Attempt to Replace X Factor UK?
The format of this new game show appears to be an evolution of Cowell’s hit series the X Factor. Also distributed by ITV Studios, could Walk the Line be an attempt to replace the beloved U.K. series?
A few months ago, X Factor UK host Dermot O’Leary announced that the series would not not air in 2021, and does not know when it will be back. The hit singing competition began in 2004, and is responsible for the success of One Direction and Little Mix. With ratings plummeting, Cowell desperately tried to revamp the show’s format.
Perhaps this new series can pick up where the X Factor UK left off. With a new game show style approach to a traditional singing competition, this may just be intriguing enough to keep ratings high. The concept months in development, will look and feel different from anything you’ve seen before. Don’t miss Walk the Line, coming to you this fall.
