Former The Voice contestant Ryleigh Modig appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show this week to share her coming out story and perform a cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s song “drivers license.”

Modig started off on Team Kelly during the current season, but she was stolen by John Legend in the Knockouts. The 18-year-old made it to the Top 17, but she lost the Instant Save vote to make it to the Semifinals.

Ryleigh Modig Shares Her Coming Out Story

Modig was thrilled to be talking to DeGeneres. She spoke fondly of her time on The Voice, especially the opportunity to work with so many “like-minded people.” She also praised Legend as a coach, calling the experience “everything I’ve ever hoped for.”

The singer also shared the story of how she came out as gay to her mother. Modig said she’s always known she was gay, but wasn’t sure how to express it. Then one day when she was 16, after falling in love with her friend, she decided to tell her mom.

“One day I was in the parking lot with my mom, and I was like, ‘Mom, I’m gay,'” Modig recalled. “And she was like, ‘That’s fine, let’s go get ice cream.’ And that is how I came out to my mom, and she’s been amazing.”

Modig added that she wants people to “know that it’s okay to be exactly who you are.” DeGeneres praised her for being so open, and she also applauded the singer’s mom for being so accepting.

“And what a great platform for everyone to see you and say we saw her first,” the host said.
