Is It Fair For Pro Singers to Compete on ‘The Masked Singer’? Here’s What We Think…
Reading Time: 3 minutes
A debate has come up around the new season of The Masked Singer. Is it fair for pro singers to compete against other celebrities? But this is nothing new either! All three finalists last season were pro singers after all.
Here’s what fans are saying plus our take on the debate.
Popular Fan Opinion
This debate began again when our friends at Gold Derby conducted a poll on the topic. (You can still vote on it too!) But the consensus seems to be that because there isn’t a real prize or anything, it is fair. Some have even compared it to Dancing With the Stars, where some celebrities have prior dancing experience and others don’t. Because the audience gets to vote, it’s just as much about the showmanship as the voice behind the mask.
The question about pro singers isn’t new though. Especially because all three finalists last season were pro singers! But if our predictions are correct and Thingamajig keeps it up, we could see a finalist who isn’t a pro singer this time around. And we would be excited about that too! This show is not just meant to be a fun guessing game, but for some celebrities on it, it’s a program to display their talent without preconceived notions of who they are getting in the way. Plenty of singers have those judgments against them already too!
Yes, It’s Fair for Pro Singers to Be on The Masked Singer
In our opinion, it isn’t only fair for pro singers to be on The Masked Singer, but it’s necessary. The best performers and voices on the show are usually pro singers. So without that added element, the production as a whole would not be as good. Yes, it’s likely that a pro singer will win, but The Masked Singer is just as much about figuring out who the celebrities are than it is about the singing competition part of it. And with only bragging rights on the line, it’s not unfair to pit them against non-singing celebrities.
On top of all that, you have to think about the pro singers that are competing on The Masked Singer. They’re not getting the artists at the top of the charts now. Many have not released new music in years or even decades. Last year’s winner, T-Pain, used the show as a platform to prove that he’s more than his auto-tuned music of the early 2000’s. And Gladys Knight wanted to show she’s still got it after all these years! So while they are pro singers, they’ve also got something to prove just as much as an athlete or comedian.
