Nicki Minaj Returns to Music with the Release of Three New Songs
Reading Time: 2 minutes
Nicki Minaj has blessed us with a few surprises this week. During an Instagram live last night, she announced that not only would she be rereleasing some of her most iconic mixtapes to all streaming platforms, but that she would be dropping new music as well.
The former American Idol judge teased earlier this week that she would rerelease her 2009 mixtape “Beam Me Up Scotty.” Minaj also surprised us all by including three new songs along with the rerelease.
“I knew if I just rereleased the mixtape without putting anything new, I knew y’all would cuss me the f*ck out,” she said during the Instagram Live, which reached nearly one million viewers.
The mixtape includes new song “Fractions,” along with the remix of “Crocodile Teeth” with Skillibeng, and “Seeing Green” featuring Lil Wayne and Drake.
This is Minaj’s first set of new music since the release of “MEGATRON” in 2019. Just after that release, Minaj surprised fans by announcing that she was retiring from music to focus on her family. The 38-year-old and husband Kenneth Petty welcomed a baby boy in September 2020.
Minaj Returns to Music with Three New Songs
In her new solo song “Fractions” Minaj clearly addresses her previous retirement claims. The song begins:
“I fell back, I had a baby, you know/
I did the mother thing, I did the wife thing/
All that, yeah/
But I think it’s quite clear now/
You’s need the bad guy/”
The feminist and inspiring lyrics are the perfect start to her rap that continues on featuring mentions of the crazy year we’ve all experienced.
Her lyrics address the Covid-19 Pandemic, the Gamestop stock controversy, and ARod (Alex Rodriguez, who was accused of cheating on fiancé Jennifer Lopez, leading to their subsequent break). With the meaningful song, Minaj proves once again that she’s the true queen of pop culture. Despite the fact that she took a three month break from social media, the rapper clearly knows exactly what’s going on.
At this point, I’m not sure whether this is a song, or a spoken word ode to all the insane events we’ve endured this past year. Either way, I’m grateful for Minaj’s return!
Fans can expect even more from the icon. She stated that she is already working on new music.
