Nick Cannon Says He’s Dealing with Loss of His Son ‘Five Minutes at a Time’
Reading Time: 2 minutes
The Masked Singer host Nick Cannon is opening up about the recent death of his 5-month-old son Zen. He said in a recent interview with Today‘s Hoda Kotb that he’s “taking it five minutes at a time” as he works through the loss.
Nick Cannon Opens Up About the Loss of His Son Zen
Nick Cannon welcomed his son Zen with model Alyssa Scott in June of this year. In early December, Zen sadly passed away of a brain tumor. He was battling Hydrocephalus, a form of brain cancer. Cannon shared the news of his son’s death in an emotional monologue on his talk show.
“I’m taking it, as my therapist says, five minutes at a time,” Cannon said in his new interview on Today. “I’m optimistic in finding the purpose through all of the pain. I’m attempting to smile, I’m attempting to be the high-frequency individual that I’ve set out to be. But along the way, there’s definitely some curves in the journey.”
Cannon said that there was “a lot of fear involved” when he shared the news of Zen’s death with his audience, adding that he “didn’t know how to talk about it.” He also said he turned to his faith and “asked for the miracle of strength” when dealing with his son’s diagnosis.

Cannon Praises Alyssa Scott for Her Strength
Cannon said Zen’s mother Alyssa Scott is “one of the strongest individuals I’ve known.” The model recently posted a tribute to Zen on Instagram, writing to her son, “I will love you for eternity.”
“For a father, it’s painful,” Cannon said. “But for a mother who carried a beautiful child for nine months and nurtured and cared for him every single day through this process… There were so many medicines and so many trips to the hospital.”
Cannon said he tries to be a “protector” to his family, adding that they “connect in prayer.” He said he’s “in awe daily” over Scott’s strength even as he tries to be there for her through this difficult time.
Zen was Cannon’s seventh child. He was born nine days after Cannon welcomed twins Zion and Zillion with Abby De La Rosa. He welcomed a daughter named Powerful Queen with Brittany Bell last December. They also have a son named Golden, and Cannon also has twins Monroe and Moroccan with his ex-wife Mariah Carey.
