Niall Horan is returning to The Voice this fall for his second season as a coach, and the singer said his time sitting next to former coach Blake Shelton helped him prepare. Horan also said that he’s “more myself” this season.

Niall Horan Says Blake Shelton Helped Him on The Voice

Horan was a new coach during Season 23, which also happened to be Shelton’s final season of the show. Now Horan is returning for Season 24, and he says his time on the show with Shelton helped him gear up for his return.

“I learned a lot from Blake last year sitting next to him,” the former One Direction star told NBC Insider. “That’s what they tend to do: stick everyone down beside Blake if you’re new. I learned a lot from even just watching him. Nothing that he said. Just watching how he does it. I think that made a lot of difference to how I’ve been in the show this year.”

Horan has previously said that Shelton is “like a dad to me.” The pair had a playful rivalry during Season 23, which ended with Horan winning the show with artist Gina Miles. A lot of people thought Shelton was sure to win his last season, but it didn’t happen.

Despite his success last season, Horan said he’s still “not used to being on TV unless it’s an interview.” He added of the coaching experience, “We’re not used to being the ones giving advice. We’re just going about our careers day to day, doing gigs, going to the studio, writing songs and stuff like that.”

The Show Returns September 25

The Voice returns for Season 24 on Monday, September 25, at 8/7c on NBC. Horan is back as a coach, alongside John Legend and Gwen Stefani. They’ll be joined by new coach Reba McEntire, who’s taking Shelton’s chair.

In a sneak peek of the new season, McEntire described her fellow coaches as “devious” and “real mean” when they’re competing during the Blind Auditions. However, she said they’re all “just as sweet and kind off stage as they can be.”
