Country star Maren Morris recently took to social media to reflect on her audition for American Idol Season 7. The show rejected her back in 2007, but she pointed out that she’s gone on to have great success nonetheless.
Maren Morris Reflects on ‘American Idol’ Audition
Morris posted a photo on Instagram showing her audition ticket for American Idol from August 2007. She said her mom had recently found the memento, adding, “I didn’t make it past the first round cattle call.”
“I wasn’t really into sports growing up but this feels like the equivalent of your mom saving your 10th place trophy,” Morris joked.
Morris got a bit snarkier on TikTok, where she posted a video set to dialogue from Pretty Woman. The audio features Julia Roberts’ character returning to a store where she was refused business. After showing her Idol audition ticket, Morris shows off all her awards.
“Big mistake. Big. Huge,” Morris lip-syncs to Roberts’ dialogue. As she wrote in the video’s caption, “sometimes the long road pays off…”
Despite Morris’s rejection from the show, American Idol‘s instagram account shared her post on stories. In their post, they pointed out that contestants are now singing her songs on theirstage.
The account also posted an interaction Morris had with a commenter in which she shared that her audition song was “Sweet Thing” by Chaka Khan. She added, “AND I SLAYED.” American Idol used it as an opportunity to encourage people to audition for Season 21.
It’s interesting that the show would use a rejected contestant who is now famous as a reason people should try out. Nevertheless, auditions are now open for next season, singers can sign up here.
