Lizzo Brings Drag Queens on Stage in Tennessee
Lizzo performed a show in Knoxville on Friday night as part of the second North American leg of her The Special Tour. During the concert, Lizzo welcomed a large group of drag queens on stage with her. In a clip of the performance, she can be heard shouting, “Support your drag entertainers!”
Teen Vogue reports that several of the queens who joined the singer on stage are past RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants, including Aquaria, Vanessa Vanjie, Asia O’Hara, and Kandy Muse. Lizzo shared a group photo with the queens on Instagram, writing, “I WANNA TAKE THE TIME AND THANK EACH & EVERY ONE OF THESE INCREDIBLE ENTERTAINERS.”
The star’s choice to welcome so many drag performers to the stage with her in Tennessee is significant due to the state’s recent anti-drag legislation. Lizzo said during Friday’s concert that some people told her to cancel her Tennessee shows.
“Their reason was valid, but why would I not come to the people who need to hear this message the most, the people who need to feel this release the most?” Lizzo said. “Why would I not create a safe space in Tennessee where we can celebrate drag entertainers and celebrate our differences, and celebrate fat Black women?”

The Singer Was a Guest Judge on Drag Race
Lizzo herself is no stranger to RuPaul’s Drag Race, as she appeared on the show as a guest judge during both Season 10 and Season 14. She also invited several Drag Race alums to appear in the second music video for her song “Juice” back in 2019.
Fans on Instagram praised the star for the statement she made at her Tennessee concert, with user @poemithegreat writing, “Now THIS is allyship. Willing to break the laws when the laws are unjust.”
Drag queen Aquaria also commented, writing, “Thank you so much for the platform for me and the drag race girls and especially for uplifting the queens on Tennessee! Those ladies are all so strong and brave and I know tonight was definitely the best of a tricky situation for everyone. Thanks for shedding light for our friends who definitely need our hand these days. We appreciate it.”
