Kelly Rowland Responds to Questions About Beyoncé
On Wednesday, Rowland appeared on the radio show Hot 97 to promote her new Paramount+ movie Fantasy Football with co-star Marsai Martin. During the interview, host Peter Rosenberg grilled Rowland about her former bandmate Beyoncé.
Specifically, he asked her about what it was like to “play second” to the star, whom he described as the “brightest light on planet Earth.” Rowland had an empowering response to the line of questioning.
“Here’s the thing, light attracts light. I am light. So I am a beautiful brown shining light,” Rowland said. “So I don’t think anybody’s light dims anyone else’s. I think that when other people start to compare you, I think that’s when it shows how dim they are of themselves.”
The singer continued by saying, “So I don’t take somebody else trying to dim my light anymore for anybody else. I love Bey, I know that she’s a light. But I know that I’m a light too.”

Rowland Says She and Beyoncé ‘Shine Together’
When Rosenberg attempted to press Rowland further on the subject, saying she “could have rested on your laurels” after Destiny’s Child, she said that “people only see things one-sided.” She said of Beyoncé, “We shine together.”
Rowland added, “Don’t be so limited. I feel like people who compare are limited in their minds. And they limit themselves, and so don’t do that to other people.”
Fans took to social media to react to the interview and criticize the choice of questions. As Jerome Trammel wrote on Twitter, “Outside of Destiny’s Child, Thee Kelly Rowland is an international superstar, actress, author & businesswoman! She’s been in this industry 25+ years & in 2022 you’re still comparing?”
Rowland has released four solo studio albums and appeared in a number of films and TV shows. She’s also published two books. She’s been married to husband Tim Weatherspoon since 2014. The couple shares two sons.
