Kelly Clarkson Releases New Song ‘I Hate Love’

“I Hate Love” starts with a bouncy banjo sound, courtesy of Martin, before Clarkson sings the track’s title three words. She goes on to sing of love, “It’s a bitch sometimes / Mama, I’m sorry for using that word / But I only use it when it applies.”

Later in the song, Clarkson refers to Martin by name, comparing him to none other than Ryan Gosling as she sings that “The Notebook lied” and she prefers It’s Complicated. Clarkson then adds, “So you can keep Gosling and I’ll take Steve Martin.”

On Friday, Martin retweeted Clarkson’s post about the new track, writing, “I’m so honored to be playing on the fabulous record. Banjo on a hit song!”

Clarkson told Billboard that she got the idea to feature Martin on the track after hearing him play banjo on livestreams early in the pandemic. The two have yet to meet in person, but Clarkson hopes to have Martin on her talk show in the future.
