Kelly Clarkson Duets Her Song ‘Breakaway’ with Sam Smith

Sam Smith, Kelly Clarkson on 'The Kelly Clarkson Show'

Former The Voice coach Kelly Clarkson performed a very special version of Kellyoke on a recent episode of her talk show. Instead of singing a cover song like she usually does, Clarkson joined forces with Sam Smith to perform a duet of her very own song, “Breakaway.”

Kelly Clarkson Sings ‘Breakaway’ with Sam Smith

Clarkson and Smith performed the song with her show’s house band, My Band Y’all. The two singers sounded great together on “Breakaway,” which appeared on Clarkson’s sophomore album of the same name in 2004.

The Kelly Clarkson Show released a video showing Clarkson and Smith rehearsing the duet. Performing “Breakaway” was apparently Smith’s request. As Clarkson’s music director Jason Halbert explained in the clip, they lowered the key a bit for Smith.

While preparing the performance, Smith admitted to Clarkson that they were “scared to sing this.” Clarkson responded, “I’m scared to sing it, because I do it on tour differently sometimes.”

Clarkson Has Covered Several of Smith’s Songs

It was fitting that Smith joined Clarkson for Kellyoke this week, since Clarkson has covered so many of their songs as part of the segment over the years. That includes classics such as “Stay with Me” and “Lay Me Down,” as well as more recent titles “Too Good at Goodbyes” and “How Do You Sleep?”

Clarkson has also been surprised in the past by a guest singing one of her songs. Earlier this year, Anne Hathaway joined her for a game of “Sing That Name That Tune.” In a hilarious moment, Hathaway beat Clarkson in identifying her iconic song “Since U Been Gone.”

Sometimes, Clarkson’s covers gain the attention of the original artists. Recently, Jennifer Lopez fangirled over Clarkson’s cover of her song “Waiting for Tonight.” Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey have also shown their appreciation after Clarkson covered their songs.
