Kelly Clarkson recently performed a cover of the song “ABCDEFU” by Gayle during the Kellyoke segment of her talk show. Notably, Clarkson changed some of the song’s lyrics during the performance, seeming to reference her divorce from ex-husband Brandon Blackstock.

Kelly Clarkson Changes Song Lyrics to Reference Brandon Blackstock

During Thursday’s episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, the host performed “ABCDEFU” during her Kellyoke segment, in which she sings covers of songs by other artists. One particular lyric of the song got a little bit of a change for Clarkson’s version.

In the original version of the song, Gayle sings, F*ck you and your mom and your sister and your job / And your broke-ass car and that sh*t you call art.” However, Clarkson instead chose to sing, “Forget you and your dad and the fact that you got half / And my broken heart, turn that sh*t into art.”

Clarkson didn’t just sing these lyrics once. She continued to sing them throughout the song, replacing the original version three separate times. It seems to be a pretty obvious dig at her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock. The couple settled their divorce about a year ago.

This Isn’t the First Time Clarkson Has Changed Lyrics

Clarkson’s latest performance isn’t the first time she’s changed the lyrics to an existing song to seemingly take a dig at Blackstock. Back in 2021, the singer covered “Happier Than Ever” by Billie Eilish, slightly changing one part of the lyrics.

In the original, Eilish sings, “You make me hate this city.” Clarkson changed the line to, “I get it, you hate this city.” Fans thought it could be referring to the couple’s legal battle over a ranch in Montana, with “this city” possibly referring to Los Angeles.

Instead of just hearing what Clarkson thinks about the split through covers, fans will soon be able to hear about the experience in her own words. The singer recently announced that her new album is called Chemistry. She promised that new music is coming “really soon.”
