Former The Voice coach Kelly Clarkson has announced that she plans to release a new album sometime next year, with songs inspired by her recent divorce from ex-husband Brandon Blackstock. This is Clarkson’s first non-Christmas studio album since 2017’s Meaning of Life.

Kelly Clarkson to Release Divorce Album in 2023

Clarkson is on the cover of the new issue of Variety, and she told the publication that she has recorded “an important album,” which she plans to release through her label Atlantic Records next year. She added, “It’s just been really healing. I recorded the record quite some time ago.”

The singer shared that the new music was based on her experience going through a divorce. She said she joked with her producer that they “wrote, like, 25 songs in a week.” She said a lot of those songs are on the album, most of which she wrote “almost two years ago.”

“Then I told my label, ‘I can’t talk about this until I’ve gone through it,’ and it’s just taken some time to do that,” Clarkson explained. “That’s one of the reasons we’ve done a lot of Christmas stuff the past two years — because I was like, ‘Well, that’s happy!’”

Clarkson said the songs on the album “cover the gamut of emotions,” adding, “It’s almost like the arc of a relationship, because the beginning is so beautiful and so sweet, and then it evolves. And sometimes it doesn’t evolve how you want.”

Clarkson Plans to Go on Tour During Talk Show Hiatus

“I definitely am going to do shows. We’re figuring that out,” Clarkson told Variety. “But when you write an album that’s so personal, it’s just therapeutic to be able to get up there.”

The singer added that she’ll only be able to tour during the summer, when her talk show is on hiatus. However, she wants to give fans an opportunity to “to scream at the top of their lungs” about their own breakups. She explained that she decided to release the album largely because so many fans can likely relate to it.

Clarkson stepped away from her coaching role on The Voice this season, but the new season of her talk show is set to premiere September 12. She also has a new cover of “9 to 5” with Dolly Parton coming out later this week.
