Justin Guarini Makes Silly Return to Dr. Pepper Commercials as Lil’ Sweet
Reading Time: 3 minutes
Season 1 American Idol runner-up Justin Guarini has returned to our television screens as a beloved character. Lil’ Sweet, the Dr. Pepper mascot he started playing in 2015, is back in a new commercial. The spot premiered during Monday night’s College Football Playoff National Championship.
Justin Guarini Returns as Lil’ Sweet in New Dr. Pepper Ad
“Lil’ Sweet is BACK y’all!” Guarini wrote on Twitter after the new commercial premiered. “I’m not saying that 100% of National Championship Lil’ Sweet commercials lead to a #Bulldogs win, but…”
In case you didn’t know, Lil’ Sweet is a miniature version of Guarini who pops up to sing to people and give them a Dr. Pepper. Usually, he advertises the diet version of the drink, but the new ad is for the regular soda. This time, he shows up to give a can to people who deserve it.
Examples include a man who hangs his TV “with just a little lean,” a mother who got her kids to school 20 minutes late, and a man who passed an online test to prove he’s not a bot. As you can see, it doesn’t exactly take much to deserve a Dr. Pepper.
Guarini told Entertainment Weekly in 2015 that his Lil’ Sweet persona is the kind of thing he does “around the house all day every day,” adding that he loves to make his wife and kids laugh.
What Has Guarini Been Up to Since ‘American Idol’?
Of course we all remember From Justin to Kelly, the 2003 movie starring Guarini and American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson. But Guarini has flown pretty under the radar since then. These Dr. Pepper commercials might even be the only place you’ve seen him.
Guarini has released two studio albums — a self-titled one in 2003, and Stranger Things Have Happened in 2005. He’s also appeared on Broadway, making his debut in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown in 2010. Guarini also performed in American Idiot, Romeo and Juliet, and Wicked.
The singer has been married to his wife Reina Capodici since 2009. They have two kids together, named William and Asher. He recently appeared in the Britney Spears jukebox musical Once Upon a One More Time as Prince Charming at the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C.
