Johnny Showcase describes himself as a singer, songwriter, entertainer, full-time lover, and music maker among other things. He has been performing for 15 years and thinks that he is a cross between Prince Harry and a minotaur. The Rhode Island native was joined by his spiritual advisor and his background singers known as “The Truth” for his America’s Got Talent audition.

Johnny has been a lover of music since he was a little kid. He idolized Stevie Wonder, Cyndi Lauper, and envisioned that he was the cat in the Paula Abdul’s “Opposites Attract” music video. His joke about this was met with crickets when it seemed like he was searching for a reaction out of Simon Cowell. The judges honestly were expecting a trainwreck of a performance.

The biggest shock of the night is that Johnny and his group were actually really incredible singers. The performance of his original song “Sensual” was highly entertaining. He has a great raspy rock voice with a hint of soul. His blue nylon outfit just made the whole act even better. The touch of comedy and novelty of the act was a refreshing couple of minutes.

Johnny’s song also taught us that Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara may have a future as background singers. They were singing along to the catchy lyrics throughout the performance. This is always great news for an act once they take a risk and perform an original song. All four judges gave a standing ovation which is pretty funny considering all of the judges doubted him at the beginning.

“You were so annoying and then the act started and it was brilliant,” Cowell said before the judges voted the act through to the next round of the competition.
