Ever since The Voice began, there has been one consistent cast member, Carson Daly. Since the show’s creation, he has served as the host. Although he’s not always center stage, many think that he’s an important portion of the show. But how important is he really?
Should The Voice Drop Carson Daly?
Unlike other shows in the reality competition show genre, The Voice’s host is shown the least. While shows like America’s Got Talent features host Terry Crews as a main cast member like judges Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Mel B, and Sofia Vergara, The Voice’s format gives way less time with the host. Although fans see Daly introducing contestants to the stage, as well as standing with families, he’s never really seen on stage.
As the competition goes on, fans begin to see more of Daly on the stage. During the live shows primarily, Daly is seen announcing each singer, and standing with them during coach commentary. Typically, Daly does not add in any commentary regarding the performance. Instead, he just provokes the coach conversation.
This makes us pose the question, how necessary is Daly for the show? Or could his role be adjusted to make more sense?
It’s Possible The Hosting Gig is More In Person, Rather Than on TV
When it gets down to Daly’s role on The Voice, it’s possible that the host function is more seen during in person tapings than on the show. Looking at auditions specifically, Daly is always seen talking to contestants’ family and friends. He’s also seen cheering with them, or being upset with them. This plays a function similar to Crews talking to contestants before/after their AGT audition.
When it comes down to other rounds, it seems like Daly introduces the singers, but isn’t filmed on stage announcing them. Instead, cable fans are able to see an intense walk-up montage segment of the singers taking the stage. Then, after the performance Daly is seen on stage, asking coaches questions regarding the performance.
It seems like Daly is a large portion of the show, but is often edited out of the actual finished product of the show. Honestly, every competition, no matter the size, needs a host, even if they don’t appear in the final product. So although Daly isn’t really seen on center stage, he’s still needed for a smoothly running show.
