Legendary radio host Howard Stern recently revealed that he was offered a major role in Bradley Cooper’s 2018 hit film A Star Is Born, but ultimately turned it down. Speaking on his SiriusXM radio show, Stern shared details of the intriguing opportunity that could have seen him shave his head and deliver an Oscar-worthy performance alongside Cooper and Lady Gaga.
Howard Stern Was Asked To Play As Bradley Cooper’s Brother in A Star Is Born
Stern and Cooper have been friends for years, with Cooper regularly appearing on Stern’s radio show. So when Cooper was developing his remake of A Star Is Born, set to star himself and pop icon Lady Gaga, he thought of Stern for a key supporting role: Jackson Maine’s (Cooper) older brother and manager. Stern admitted he seriously considered the offer, as he saw great potential in the project.
“I said I’m gonna go full-on into it. I’m gonna shave my head, I’m gonna change my whole look,” Stern said.
However, as concepts for the film evolved, Cooper ultimately rewrote the part into a half-brother role. A role that was played brilliantly by Sam Elliott in the finished film. Stern on the other hand, still wonders what could have been.
While the physical differences between the two may have been stark, Stern emphasizes that he was committed to transforming himself. This included the drastic act of shaving his famously voluminous hair. “Oh it would have been amazing,” he asserted, always one to fantasize about fame.
Howard Stern Might Still Star Alongside Bradley Cooper
Comedic visions aside, Stern admits to feeling somber about passing up such a monumental chance. He confided that he’s only shared the story with a select few in his inner circle, which elicited strong reactions. While Stern playing Maine’s brother did not happen, Cooper made it clear he hasn’t given up on casting his friend in a future film.
“I think it’s gonna happen,” Cooper said. “I just have to figure out the right thing so that you’ll say yes.”
Knowing Stern’s reputation for being highly selective with creative endeavors outside his radio show, finding that winning script that compels his participation could prove challenging. However, the pair’s enduring friendship raises the chances of Stern eventually agreeing to a role that captures his interest.
