Selena Gomez has officially taken her stance on the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, but fans are seemingly displeased by her mindset. Now, the Only Murders In The Building actress is under fire online for undervaluing her social media influence.
Selena Gomez Breaks Her Silence on Israel-Palestine Attacks
After the Palestinian militant group launched surprise cross-border raids from Gaza on October 7, Israel and Hamas are now at war, claiming thousands of lives, claiming hundreds of hostages, and leaving numerous people homeless. This heartbreaking and agonizing news has prompted several Hollywood celebrities to speak out on the matter.
The “Who Says” hitmaker was the most recent celebrity to condemn the violence caused by the war. In an Instagram Story post, Gomez explained why she broke her silence just now.
“I’ve been taking a break from social media because my heart breaks to see all of the horror, hate, violence, and terror that’s going on in the world,” she wrote. “People being tortured and killed or any act of hate towards any one group is horrific. We need to protect ALL people, especially children, and stop the violence for good.”
“I’m sorry if my words will never be enough for everyone or a hashtag. I just can’t stand by innocent people getting hurt. That’s what makes me sick. I wish I could change the world. But a post won’t,” she continued.
It pays to mention that it’s not Gomez’s first time stating her opinion about the Israel-Palestine conflict. In 2014, the pop star also weighed in on the war, encouraging people to “Pray for Gaza.” Hours later this previous post, Gomez clarified that she was “not picking any sides” and that she was “praying for peace and humanity for all.”
Fans Slam Her for Underestimating Her Huge Social Media Reach
While Gomez’s stance is welcomed on the internet, many fans expressed their frustration over her sentiment. Apparently, some internet users are baffled by how the singer “managed to victimize herself” in a discussion about genocide.
Basically, fans argue that Gomez’s statement, although well-intentioned, lacked essence. According to them, it’s disappointing for Gomez to stay neutral in times where it’s obvious which side to stand for.
“a post won’t help” says the most followed person on insta, meanwhile she has the opportunity to inform her 400 million followers abt a genocide…if ur too cowardly to stand w the oppressed then keep it in the drafts,” a person wrote.
“So you posting to your 400+ million (followers) won’t change anything?! Unless it’s for causes that you care about,” another user stated.
“How did she manage to find a way to make herself the victim here?” another fan commented.
On social media, various Hollywood actors have stated their opinion on the current situation in Israel and Gaza. Some of them include Natalie Portman, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Gal Gadot, Madonna and Jerry Seinfeld. Barbra Streisand, Selma Blair, Reese Witherspoon, Justin Bieber, Josh Gad, Gigi Hadid, U2, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kim Kardashian, Jessica Seinfeld and Lynda Carter also asserted their calls for humanity.
