Wednesday star Jenna Ortega has taken the opportunity to dismiss recent online speculation that she and Johnny Depp are dating. Citing her defense on Instagram, Ortega denies having any connection with the Pirates of the Caribbean actor.

Jenna Ortega Shuts Down Rumors that She’s Dating Johnny Depp

The rumors sparked after French celebrity gossip account DeuxMoi reported the two were spotted together. According to the site, Ortega (20) and Depp (60) could possibly be working together on a sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 hit, Beetlejuice. The speculation has gained widespread social media attention, giving rise to disturbing comments about the pair.

Last weekend, Ortega set the record straight about her alleged romance with Depp. The 20-year-old actress dismissed the online allegations via an Instagram story.

“This is so ridiculous I can’t even laugh,” she wrote. “I have never met or worked with Johnny Depp in my life. Please stop spreading lies and leave us alone.”

Meanwhile, the Secret Window star also took the time to address the rumors. Depp’s representative claimed that he has “no personal or professional relationship” with Ortega and hasn’t even spoken to her.

“He is not involved in any project with her, nor does he intend to be. He is appalled by these baseless and malicious rumours that are intended to harm his reputation and career,” the rep stated.

The highly anticipated Beetlejuice sequel began filming earlier this year. It’s upcoming release date is September 6, 2024. According to The Daily Mail, fans speculated that Depp would be appearing in the film after his name showed up in Google search results for the movie’s cast.

She Got Real About Toxic Social Media Trolls

Back in June, the Wednesday star opened up about the struggle of existing in a manipulative digital world. In a discussion with Elle Fanning for Variety’s Actors-on-Actors series, emotional Ortega tackled the impact of toxic social media trolls on her being.

“Social media, what it does to anyone our age, it’s such a comparing game,” she said. “It influences bandwagon mentality. It’s very manipulative.”

Ortega then admitted that while she wants to display her humor on social media, she makes sure to be keen with what she posts as she doesn’t want to be misinterpreted. Now, after appearing as the main character of Wednesday, more trolls than ever have taken over her social media.

“They see your vulnerability and twist it in a way that you don’t always expect,” she said. “It’s so strange. Sorry, I didn’t mean to do this. It’s such a hard thing to balance. Because how do you be honest without jeopardizing your own health and safety? It’s very easy to feel almost out of control.”
