With their chemistry both on and off the dance floor, it’s almost impossible for Val Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Johnson not to fall in love with each other. It’s no surprise that these Dancing With The Stars pros are now a couple in real life.
Starting off as friends, Chmerkovskiy and Johnson are now enjoying life together alongside their son, Rome Valentin. Here’s everything to know about their relationship from the beginning to now.
Val Chmerkovskiy, Jenna Johnson First Met in 2014
Chmerkovskiy and Johnson first met when the Johnson joined DWTS as a troupe member. During December of the same year, the two appeared on stage alongside each other, performing Sway: A Dance Trilogy in New York City. At that time, no one really knew if the two were already hitting it off.
They Dated in 2015 But Broke Up After a Year
While the pair didn’t immediately announce the news, they started dating sometime in 2015. During the next year, they were spotted dating and getting cuddly in West Hollywood for lunch. However, in late 2016, the two briefly called it quits. Chmerkovskiy then dated Amber Rose in December 2016, eventually they split in February 2017.
They Got Back Together, Shared a Kiss on DWTS stage
Upon his separation from Rose, the DWTS pair sparked reconciliation rumors after they’ve posted snaps from their trip across Europe. Their official comeback announcement took place when they attended Peta Murgatroyd and Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s wedding. The two also walked the red carpet together during the Industry Dance Awards in 2017.
Furthermore, back in DWTS season 25 finale, the pair shared an adorable kiss on stage while dancing to Kelsea Ballerini’s special performance of “Legends.”
Chmerkovskiy, Johnson Got Engaged in 2018
During their trip to Italy in the summer of 2018, Chmerkovskiy proposed to Johnson. The So You Think You Can Dance alum shared the happy news by posting two photos of her then fiancé getting down on one knee. A month after, they made their red carpet debut as an engaged couple during the premiere of Crazy Rich Asians in Hollywood, California. In November of the same year, the two were already on the wedding planning stage.
They Embarked on Tour, Got Married, Had a Romantic Honeymoon
At the end of 2018, Chmerkovskiy and Johnson took part in the Dancing with the Stars: Live! A Night To Remember tour. In April 2019, the two tied the knot in Rancho Palo Verdes, California. Their family and friends joined them for their intimate festivities. They then went on a honeymoon together in St Lucia. As a lovely pair, they made appearances at the Industry Dance Awards as well as the premiere of Lionsgate’s Knives Out.
Chmerkovskiy, Johnson Celebrate Their First Wedding Anniversary
Sharing an adorable photo of them while eating cake in bed, Chmerkovskiy and Johnson seemingly had a simple wedding anniversary celebration.
“I will love you from now till eternity. Happy April 13th, our wedding anniversary,” Johnson wrote.
The Two Got Candid About Their COVID-19 Experience as a Couple
At the height of the pandemic, Chmerkovskiy and Johnson had to navigate married life. According to them, they have grown closer during quarantine, allowing them to be “humans, not just artists.” This was after they have purchased their first house together.
“We’ve spent the last six years on the road,” Chmerkovskiy said. “This happened exactly when it needed to happen. Everything we’ve done in this home, we’ve done.”
Chmerkovskiy, Johnson Announce Pregnancy
Back in July 15, 2022, the DWTS couple announced that they are expecting their first child. As Johnson described, this pregnancy happened during the time that they just relaxed and didn’t stress themselves.
“Our little baby was created with a lot of love,” Johnson said. “It all seems so magical and meant to be.”
When Johnson’s bump turned 20 weeks, the couple revealed that they’re preparing to be parents to a baby boy. In an Instagram post, Johnson admitted being both emotional and excited to be a mom.
While pregnant, Johnson has naturally observed how her body changed as it should. Johnson stated that her husband has made her feel “super empowered” and “so beautiful” amid the process.
They Welcomed Their First Child
On January 20, 2023, Johnson and Chmerkovskiy shared that their first child has been born. Showing a photo where there were holding their baby boy’s hand, the couple stated that their “world is forever shared.”
Back in February 7, 2023, she uploaded a cute photo of her son on Instagram to celebrate his one-month birthday. In the same post, Johnson revealed the name of their son: Rome Valentin Chmerkovskiy.
The Couple Revealed They Suffered Miscarriage Before Rome’s Arrival
In their interview with Good Morning America, the couple shared that they experienced a miscarriage back in 2021. During this time, “no one knew” that they were pregnant.
“We were in Dallas for a show, and while we were practicing, we did something, and I just turned to him. I’m like, ‘Oh, I’m … I think I’m bleeding,’ ” Johnson shared. “And immediately my heart just dropped. I could see in his face just went like, white.”
Getting more candid about the issue, Johnson admitted that she was “hurting so much” then.
