RuPaul’s Drag Race UK has recently released a statement, apologizing for mixing up two black queens in a contestant’s farewell video. While the show has admitted its mistake, fans continue to criticize its social media team for its “awful” racial bias.
RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Mistakes Baby for Black Peppa
RuPaul’s Drag Race UK has recently found itself in some online beef. Following the elimination of transgender queen Dakota Schiffer, the show prepared a farewell clip, that failed to satisfy their audience.
In a now-deleted video, Schiffer was asked who among the queens has she made friends with in the show. The Sussex diva found the question hard to answer, but nevertheless mentioned Starlet, Baby and Danny Beard.
However, Black Peppa’s picture popped in the video as Baby’s name was dropped. Fans immediately called out this error, interpreting the same as a case of racism. In response to this icky mistake, Baby also tweeted her disappointment over the removed content.
“I know I’m late to the party but I genuinely hope the person who edited Dakota Schiffer’s farewell video gets fucking fired,” Baby wrote. “It’s so embarrassing that someone on the Drag Race UK socials team can’t differentiate between the only two black girls on the cast.”
Black Peppa agreed with Baby, stating that the blunder was “lazy and disgusting.” Furthermore, fans criticized how seemingly impossible would the editor mistake white queens from one another despite their similarities. With Baby and Black Peppa being the only black queens in the competition, fans assert that the show could’ve been more sensitive and careful.
The Show Releases an Apology Statement After the Error
Following the online backlash, Drag Race UK quickly deleted the upload. Subsequently, they released a statement, apologizing to the Drag Race community for the mistake.
“We are so deeply sorry about an error that appeared on a BBC social video that was made to support RuPaul’s Drag Race UK,” the post reads. “We have sincerely apologised to both Baby and Black Peppa and we also want to extend our heartfelt apologies to anyone else that this post offended.”
Baby directly quoted this Twitter and thanked the show for “taking responsibility for their actions.” Nonetheless, despite the apology, fans seem to have not forgiven the show. Some even ask for a heavy punishment for the video editor.
