America’s Got Talent Season 11 contestant Athena Dion is competing on the new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. In a new interview, Athena sent a message to judge Howie Mandel, who buzzed her performance with drag queen girl group The Spice Gurlz.
‘AGT’ Drag Queen Sends Message to Howie Mandel
In Season 11 of America’s Got Talent, drag queen Athena Dion auditioned for the show as part of a drag group called The Spice Gurlz. In their audition, the group dressed like the original Spice Girls and lip-synced to the song “Spice Up Your Life.”
Judges Howie Mandel and Simon Cowell buzzed the group’s performance, although Cowell later voted “yes” to sending the group through after hearing them sing a cappella. However, it seemed like he was more interested in annoying his fellow judge Mel B, aka Scary Spice.
Mel B also voted “yes” to sending them through. However, both Mandel and Heidi Klum voted “no,” meaning the group was immediately eliminated. Now Athena is competing on Season 18 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, and she has a message for Mandel.
“Well, look at me now, ho, honey!” Athena said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “America sure does have talent, and here it is!”
When EW‘s Joey Nolfi mentioned Athena’s appearance on AGT, she appeared embarrassed to relive the experience, although she seemed pleased that they were able to get Cowell to come around, saying the group “buttered him up.”
“We sang live — not well,” Athena recalled, before admitting, “I don’t think I would have given us the ‘yes’ either. Looking back, I would have been like, ‘That was terrible.’ I want it to be erased from the internet. Don’t search it, please.”
You can watch Athena Dion as she competes on Season 18 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, premiering January 2 on MTV.
