Drag Race Sweden was just announced, becoming the latest international spin-off to be added to RuPaul’s growing franchise. More details about the show’s first season are forthcoming.
New Spin-Off ‘Drag Race Sweden’ Announced
Entertainment Weekly reports that Tom Campbell and RuPaul will executive-produce the new spin-off with World of Wonder founders Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey. It will air on SVT in Sweden and also stream on the WOW Presents Plus platform. Host, judges, and cast for the show’s first season are expected to be announced soon.
“Drag Race and the art of drag are worldwide phenomena that continue to attract global viewers, so we are thrilled to introduce a fierce new group of queens with Drag Race Sweden,” Barbato and Bailey shared in a statement. “As our drag family continues to grow, we look forward to watching these new queens sashay onto our screens.”
Drag Race Holland contestant Roem predicted on Twitter that Sweden would have the “shadiest” iteration of the show, based on how competitive the country has been in the Eurovision Song Contest. The Swedish group ABBA famously won the competition in 1974 with the song “Waterloo.”
RuPaul’s Franchise Is Taking Over the World
The Drag Race franchise continues to branch out with international spin-offs all over the world. Examples include Drag Race Thailand, Drag Race UK, Canada’s Drag Race, RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under, and Drag Race España, among others.
Drag Race Philippines and Drag Race France have also been announced. The French spin-off will be hosted by Nicky Doll, who competed on Season 12 of the original series. Nicky was born in Marseille, France.
The franchise also recently aired RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs. The World, in which drag queens from various countries competed. The title went to Blu Hydrangea from Northern Ireland, with Mo Heart of the United States as runner-up.
