In a recent guest appearance on TODAY, Lilly Singh, the multi-talented entertainer and judge on Canada’s Got Talent, unveiled her latest creation, The Mindful Adventures of Unicorn Island. The vibrant animated series, now available on YouTube, has been making waves for its unique approach to addressing complex subjects. In particular, the crucial topic of managing emotions, in a way that is both engaging and relatable for children.

Lilly Singh Shares the Inspiration Behind Her New Show

Singh opened up about her vision for The Mindful Adventures of Unicorn Island. She expressed her intention to start conversations about mental health from a young age. Her goal is to get the conversation started, particularly in cultures where discussing such matters remains somewhat taboo.

The Mindful Adventures of Unicorn Island is not just an ordinary animated series; it’s a world where life’s struggles manifest in fantastical ways. At its heart is ten-year-old Young Lilly, who embarks on journeys to her happy place, Unicorn Island. There, she encounters a colorful cast of imaginary friends, including Pep and Velvet. Pop and Velvet playfully guide her through life’s valuable lessons.

The show, produced by Unicorn Island Productions, Headspace Studios, and Kara Lee Burk, has gained attention for its creative storytelling and its mostly South Asian cast. This commitment to representation resonates with Singh on a personal level, as she understands the significance of challenging stereotypes, especially when discussing mental health.

Addressing complex topics in a manner suitable for children presented a unique challenge for the creators of the show. Singh shared insights into the delicate balance they had to strike to make sure that the content remains fun and engaging while addressing serious issues like divorce and conflicts at school. The show’s goal is to encourage children to embrace their emotions, express their feelings, and prioritize their mental well-being.

The New Show Helps People Going Through Mental Health

With ten episodes in total, each exploring different aspects of Lilly’s life and struggles, the show offers a diverse range of emotional and educational content. While it doesn’t promise to provide perfect solutions to life’s challenges, it aims to show growth and how she applies her newfound knowledge from Unicorn Island to real-life situations.

The show’s creators are open to exploring a wide range of topics in the future. They believe that nothing should be off-limits when it comes to helping children navigate the complexities of life. They intend to continue striking a balance between whimsy and reality, offering valuable life lessons within a unique setting.

Unicorns have always held a special place in Singh’s heart, symbolizing the fantastical and mythical aspects of life. She believes in the power of creating a world that seems impossible yet inspires positive change.

Beyond her work on the show, Singh continues to use social media as a tool for positive change. Recently, she celebrated her birthday with a campaign to support the Unicorn Island Fund, which empowers girls and women in India.
