In her acceptance speech for Video of the Year, Underwood thanked Legend for sending her the song and agreeing to sing with her on it. She also thanked everyone behind the scenes for making the music video happen under such “awkward conditions.” Shooting the video amid the pandemic definitely wasn’t easy, but the dynamic duo harmonized in a set made to look like a whimsical winter wonderland.
“THANK YOU SO MUCH! My first @CMT! Thank you @carrieunderwood, our director Randee St Nicholas and all of you who loved it and voted!” Legend wrote on Twitter.
After winning the biggest award of the night, Underwood continues her reign as the performer with the most CMT Awards in history. The American Idol winner took the stage with Needtobreathe to perform “I Wanna Remember.” The performance was one of the highlights of the night and featured just incredible singing all around.
Also during the show, Season 16 American Idol finalist Gabby Barrett picked up an award for Female Video of the Year for her song “The Good Ones.” The Voice mentor Kane Brown won two awards and hosted the event along with mentor and guest coach Kelsea Ballerini. Ballerini took home an award for her 2020 CMT Music Awards performance of “The Other Girl” with Halsey.
American Idol judge Luke Bryan performed his song “Down To One” and totally rocked the outdoor stage. Bryan will be touring the United States this summer as concerts and live performances are slowly returning. All of this comes as the news of his 2022 Las Vegas residency has fans pumped.
