BTS Army Isn’t Happy With Katy Perry’s Latest ‘American Idol’ Comment
Reading Time: 2 minutes
The BTS Army took issue with American Idol judge Katy Perry after this week’s new episode. It started when one of this season’s contestants auditioned with the BTS song “Dynamite.”
After the performance, Katy made a comment that had fans bringing up something she said about them in 2019. Read on to find out what they’re up in arms about.
BTS Army Is Mad At Katy Perry
“I purple heart you!” Katy Perry declared after American Idol contestant Anthony Key performed “Dynamite” by BTS. The color purple is important to the K-pop group’s fans, as they tell each other, “I purple you.”

Some BTS fans on Twitter took issue with Katy using this word, pointing to previous comments she made about the Army at a 2019 concert. One user explained that a BTS fan came up with the “purple” phrase, and it’s “a sanctuary word for us.”
According to The Sun, fans’ issue with Katy stems from a joke she made during a 2019 concert. She performed after BTS and told the fans who had stayed, “Most of you get to stay late past your bedtime.”
Some fans reportedly left the concert over the comment, while others refrained from responding to her performance. The Twitter user who posted video of the moment said Katy “only makes boomer jokes.”
Are Fans Overreacting To Katy’s Comment?
Some Twitter users didn’t see a problem with Katy using the word “purple.” One person wrote that “BTS didn’t create the color purple,” while another asked, “Is ‘I purple you’ copyrighted?” Another fan argued that “I purple you” is “free to use by anyone.”

Meanwhile, if you’re wondering more about the contestant who performed “Dynamite,” he unfortunately didn’t end up going to Hollywood. Anthony Key showed off some nice dance moves during his performance, however, and even taught the judges his choreography.
Katy told Anthony that he was a “melting pot” of various artists he looked up to, but she wasn’t sure who he really was. Lionel Richie complimented his choreography, but wasn’t sure if he should be a lead vocalist.
