Everyone’s favorite British variety show, Britain’s Got Talent, returned this past Saturday and it was as fun, wacky, and entertaining as ever. But I bet Simon Cowell was a very happy boy this morning when the ratings came in. Not only was BGT the highest rated show of the night, it was ITV’s highest rated show of the year so far.
9.6 million people tuned into watch the premiere. That’s pretty good ratings for us here in the U.S. but that’s crazy good in Britain. That’s almost a third of the population of the entire country. This stands in sharp contrast to Simon Cowell’s other talent competition show, The X Factor UK, which is hemorrhaging viewers. Much like BGT‘s wildly popular American spin-off America’s Got Talent, people just love this format.
Which makes me wonder: is the future of talent competition shows the variety format? Are people sick of purely singing shows? The ratings on everything but The Voice seem to play that out.
