Some of the biggest names in the history of American Idol will return to the stage on May 2. The network wasn’t joking around when they said that they planned to celebrate the milestone twentieth season with familiar faces.
American Idol Brings Back Winners, Fan Favorites for “The Great Idol Reunion”
American Idol continues to celebrate their landmark achievement in this season of the competition. Fans of the series have seen a plethora of former performers, but this is the greatest line up yet.
On May 2, American Idol is welcoming back winners: Ruben Studdard (season two), Jordin Sparks (season six), David Cook (season seven), Kris Allen (season eight), Scotty McCreery (season ten), Maddie Poppe (season 16), and Laine Hardy (season 17). In addition, Lauren Alaina (season ten runner up), Willie Spence (season 19 runner up), Caleb Lee Hutchinson (season 16 runner up), Grace Kinstler (season 19 third place winner), and Laci Kaye Booth (top five contestant on season 17) will all make appearances.
The network has confirmed that other guests will be added as a surprise in the upcoming episode. I think it’s safe to say all American Idol fans are hoping to see the first winner of the series, Kelly Clarkson, make a homecoming during the landmark episode.
“The Great Idol Reunion” airs on Monday, May 2 from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET on ABC. Episodes are available on demand and on Hulu the day after their premiere.
Series Favorites Return for Season 20
This season of American Idol has incorporated alumni performers into the format as a celebration of the overall series. The first guests were seen during the prestigious Hollywood Week. The alums came back to the stage to mentor the new singers. Alaina, Studdard, Cook, Sparks, Lee DeWyze (season nine winner), and Haley Reinhart (season ten finalist) mentored incoming singers in this round.
Following that round, American Idol alum Jimmie Allen mentored the singers alongside pop singer Bebe Rexha. The most recent guest artists were Chayce Beckham, Phillip Phillips, and Alejandro Aranda during the Top 20. Since each alum has brought something new to the stage before, it’ll be interesting to see what they bring this time around.
