American Idol Season 16 winner Maddie Poppe is back with a catchy new song called “One That Got Away.” Maddie posted on Instagram that this is the start of a “new chapter” for her, and fans are loving the sound.

Maddie shows off a jazzy, funky style on the new track, which is sure to be stuck in your head. In the chorus, Maddie sings, “I’ll be the one that got away / I’ll be the one you wish you had / I’ll be the one that you remember / ‘Cause you let my love run bad.”
The single comes with a colorful cover, in which Maddie shows off long, dark hair. The background features multicolor stripes and butterflies. One fan in the song’s YouTube comments compared Maddie’s look to American Idol judge Katy Perry. The song’s title is also close to Perry’s “The One That Got Away,” although the sound is definitely different.
Another fan compared the song’s sound to Dua Lipa and Corinne Bailey Rae. Several commenters said they’re looking forward to a full album from Poppe. Her last full-length release, Whirlwind, came out in 2019. Fingers crossed we won’t have to wait long to hear more.

Maddie Is Going on Tour in June
Maddie recently announced new concert dates this June, as she travels to various East Coast cities to perform. The first show will be in Atlanta on June 1, and she’ll go on to visit North Carolina, New York, and more. You can see dates and buy tickets on her website.
The 24-year-old is also among the past American Idol winners and fan favorites who will return to the show for next Monday’s reunion episode, marking the competition’s 20th anniversary. Her boyfriend and Season 16 runner-up Caleb Lee Hutchinson will also appear.
Maddie was the first winner during the show’s ABC revival, which kicked off in 2018. Country star Gabby Barrett finished in third place that season.
