American Idol judge Katy Perry just made a big announcement about past contestant Michael J. Woodard. The 23-year-old singer officially signed with Perry’s record label Unsub Records.

Woodard made it to the Top 5 on American Idol Season 16 in 2018 — the first season on ABC with Perry as a judge. As Perry revealed on Twitter, he has a debut single coming out soon.

Perry tweeted the news on Friday, saying she’s “melted over his voice” since he was on American Idol. She shared that she was “honored to help nurture [and] mentor his artist journey.”

Woodard also tweeted about the news, saying he’s “so grateful” to be signed to the label. He added, “I love you @katyperry thank you for believing in me here we goooo. Love you so much.”

Woodard is the third artist signed to Unsub Records, which was founded by Perry in 2014 and is owned by Capitol Music Group. The two other artists are Ferras and Cyn, both of whom have released an EP and several singles under the label.

“I’m going to try and avoid the things that take away any fighting chance for an artist to have financial success,” Perry told The Hollywood Reporter when plans for the label were announced. “As people are coming to me with opportunities, I’m thinking, ‘How would I want to be treated?’”

Woodard Is Releasing His First Single

Perry and Woodard both announced that his debut single, titled “why you texting me,” will be released on May 21. You can pre-save the song now on Spotify while we wait for it to officially drop.

Woodard auditioned for American Idol Season 16 with the song “Make It Rain.” Throughout the competition, he performed songs such as “You Oughta Know,” “Titanium,” and “Beauty and the Beast.” He’s also a voice actor, starring as Arlo the Alligator Boy in the movie of the same name, as well as a follow-up TV series.

Woodard isn’t the only former Idol contestant who’s going places. Season 18 singer Francisco Martin just released an EP, which features fellow contestant Julia Gargano on a duet called “Swollen.” We can’t wait to hear what Woodard has up his sleeve for his first single.
