‘Alter Ego’ Recap: Vote Comes Down to the Wire as Head-to-Heads Continue

Alter Ego Head to HeadsFox

Reading Time: 3 minutes

On Wednesday night, FOX’s new singing competition Alter Ego returned for another episode of the Head-to-Head round. The series, hosted by Rocsi Diaz, uses modern motion-capture technology to put a totally new spin on the classic talent show format.

The show’s contestants design their own avatar or “Alter Ego.” They control the avatar’s movements from backstage while they perform. The winner of this season will receive $100,000, as well as the mentorship of the show’s celebrity judges — Alanis Morissette, Grimes, Nick Lachey, and Will.i.am.

Tonight, four more of the remaining contestants performed. They were separated into pairs, with the judges choosing only one of the two to move on to the Semifinals. That means two singers were eliminated during tonight’s show. One of the decisions was neck and neck, while the other was unanimous.

‘Alter Ego’ Seven vs. Siren Match-Up Determined by Four Votes

The first head-to-head pairing of the night was between Seven (aka Kyara Tetreault) and Siren (aka Mama Yaya). Seven performed “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish, while Siren sang “I’m Goin’ Down” by Mary J. Blige. Both singers have sultry, unique voices, so it was a tough match-up to decide on.

Lachey said Seven’s performance was in his top three for the whole competition so far, while Will.i.am told Siren that she didn’t hit a bad note during her performance. It’s easy to see why the judges were split down the middle when it came time to vote for who should move on.

Because the panel was tied, the decision came down to the audience vote. Host Rocsi Diaz shared that the winner was determined based on just four votes, so the audience was apparently just as torn. Ultimately, they chose to send Seven to the Semifinals, meaning we had to say goodbye to Siren and her incredible voice.

Judges Vote Unanimously to Send Queen Dynamite to the Semifinals

The second match-up of the night was between Aster (aka Kaylee Franzen) and Queen Dynamite (aka Dasharra Bridges). Aster performed “Complicated” by Avril Lavigne, while Queen Dynamite sang “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa. The Alter Ego judges had a much easier time deciding between them.

The panel seemed to agree that Aster’s performance was a step down from her audition, with Will.i.am saying it felt a bit rushed. However, they were wowed by Queen Dynamite’s performance, in which the singer displayed just how confident she can be. Morissette said she had “zero fear.”

The judges ended up voting unanimously to send Queen Dynamite to the Semifinals, meaning Aster was eliminated. Kaylee came out singing “Always Remember Us This Way” by Lady Gaga in a powerhouse farewell performance. If she had gone with that song instead of “Complicated,” she might have had a better chance of making it through.
