Brooke Simpson Covers ‘Friend Like Me’ from Aladdin
Simpson’s “Friend Like Me” cover was directed by Michael Korte and arranged by Bryson Camper. Korte’s YouTube channel is full of tributes to various Broadway songs and musicals. (Aladdin first opened on Broadway in 2014, based on the 1992 Disney animated film.)
Past videos from Korte have featured talent show stars such as Bob the Drag Queen and Kornbread from RuPaul’s Drag Race, as well as Sophia James from American Idol. Now it’s Simpson’s turn to put her own spin on a theatrical tune.
Simpson stands against a simple purple background and sings to the camera in the clip, giving the popular Disney song a funky edge. The singer also shows off the powerhouse voice that took her to the Finals on AGT.
The performance received plenty of positive comments on Instagram, with Idol star Grace Kinstler writing, “Sing!!!!” and adding fire emojis. The official Aladdin musical account also commented simply, “She-nie!!!”
