‘American Idol’s Sophia James Pays Tribute to Stephen Sondheim in New Music Video
Former American Idol contestant Sophia James appears in a new music video paying tribute to Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim with a cover of “Being Alive” from the musical Company. This singer made it to the Top 10 on Idol Season 18.
Sophia James Covers Broadway Song ‘Being Alive’
Sophia appears alongside fellow singers Christine Noel and Astyn Turr in the new video, directed by Michael Korte, whose YouTube channel features a number of other Broadway tributes. The music production and vocal arrangement on this cover of “Being Alive” are by Christine Noel.
The three singers combine their strong voices for a beautiful performance of the song against a minimalist backdrop. The musical Company is currently running on Broadway and recently won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival. The show’s composer, Stephen Sondheim, passed away last year.
Sophia recently posted about the new video on Instagram, writing that it was “the coolest experience ever.” She added, “I’m shook to the core by the talent these people possess – they were all an absolute joy to work with. I’m so honored to have been a part of this.”
Sophia Is Releasing a Single This Week
Sophia James, who recently graduated from UCLA, announced that she’s releasing a new single called “Still…” this Friday, June 17. Fans can pre-order the song here. Sophia is also performing a show on Thursday, June 16, in Los Angeles.
The singer auditioned for American Idol Season 18 under her real name, Sophia Wackerman. Later in the season, she began using her stage name Sophia James. Because the live shows this season took place early in the Covid-19 pandemic, Sophia and her fellow Top 20 singers performed from home.
Last year, Sophia released a five-song EP called Stand Beneath the Sky. Earlier this year, she put out the single “Meteor.” You can follow Sophia on Instagram to keep up with her career.
