‘AGT’ Star Brooke Simpson Aims to be ‘the First Major Indigenous Pop Star’
Reading Time: 2 minutes
Earlier this week on America’s Got Talent, former The Voice star Brooke Simpson delivered a powerhouse audition. In a new video released by the show, Simpson shares why she chose her audition song.
The video also features interviews with nine-year-old magician The Amazing Shoji and stand-up comedian Josh Blue, both of whom shared insight into their talents.
Brooke Simpson Talks About Her ‘AGT’ Audition
Simpson sang “Cuz I Love You” by Lizzo for her AGT audition. She said she chose that song because “it’s powerful, it’s dynamic, and it’s huge.” The singer added that she always wants her performances to be those three things.
She shared that she might have been singing since birth, but she recorded her first song at two years old. Simpson previously competed on The Voice in Season 13, finishing in third place on Team Miley Cyrus. Since then, she’s released several singles and gained a following of over 100,000 people on Instagram.
Simpson is Native American, and she told the AGT judges before her audition that she dreams of becoming “the first major indigenous pop star.” She said she never had people who looked like her to look up to growing up, so she hopes to be that for young people.

The Amazing Shoji and Josh Blue Talk About Auditioning
Young magician The Amazing Shoji shared that he’s been practicing magic for almost three years. (More specifically, for two years and three quarters.) He said he was inspired to do magic by his older cousin, who showed him a card trick. Shoji bothered him until he taught him how to do it.
Meanwhile, Josh Blue shared that he’s a big fan of comedians Chris Rock, Mitch Hedberg, George Carlin, and Richard Pryor. He jokingly dissed judge Howie Mandel, adding that he auditioned “to show the world what comedy can be.” Blue has cerebral palsy, which he discussed in his honest and hilarious routine this week.
Simpson, Shoji, and Blue all made it through the AGT auditions round, and we’ll see them again in the Judge Cuts. They all received four “yes” votes from the judges to move on.
