‘The Voice’s “The Comeback Stage” Week 2 Recap

The second week of Blind Auditions for Season 15 of The Voice has come to an end. And that means two new episodes of “The Comeback Stage” with fifth coach, Kelsea Ballerini! The digital companion series gives six artists who did not turn a chair a second chance to join a team. During the Blind Auditions, episodes are posted each night with Kelsea coaching a new artist. The comeback artists have all selected new songs to try to move one step closer to earning a spot in the Live Shows!
Let’s take a look at the two artists featured on “The Comeback Stage” this week!

Lynnea Moorer
First up, we have Lynnea Moorer. The video title says “Jennifer Hudson Wishes Lynnea Moorer Was on Her Team,” but let’s be real. If JHud really wanted her on her team, she would’ve turned her chair. Anyway, that’s beside the point. Lynnea’s Blind Audition song, “Location” by Khalid, missed the mark. All the coaches said she should come back and try again with a more dynamic song. Well, it seems like Kelsea agreed!
Lynnea is back singing Troye Sivan’s “My My My.” I love this song but I don’t know if it’s the best to showcase vocals either. I agree that it’s a better fit than “Location,” but I think song choice could be her downfall here. From what we heard of the song in this coaching session, there’s not a “moment” for her in it. And as Kelsea implied, Lynnea seems nervous. Kelsea tried to get her to shake it out–literally–and I’m hoping that helps going into her actual battle! While Lynnea has a lot of experience making videos on YouTube, this is in a whole new ballpark. The Voice comes down to one performance and there’s no opportunity to try again if it doesn’t go as planned. I like Lynnea’s energy though and I’m hoping she can pull it together.

Wyatt Rivers
Wyatt failed to turn any chairs when he sang “River” by Leon Bridges in his Blind Audition. In my opinion, his audition was the weakest of “The Comeback Stage” contestants so far. I was honestly surprised he got asked back over, say, Sam Hastings last week. But that’s neither here nor there, Wyatt is back! The coaches gave a lot of constructive criticism after his Blind Audition. They wanted to hear more out of his performance because it was very one-dimensional. Blake also thought Wyatt struggled with pitch in the high notes but he thought it was because of nerves.
Kelsea liked what she heard though and had Wyatt join her team on “The Comeback Stage.” This time around, he is singing “One Call Away” by Charlie Puth. After watching the video, I think that Wyatt is…not good. It’s that simple. Where Charlie Puth’s voice is smooth and effortless, Wyatt brings a harshness to the song. Wyatt’s break may be similar, but he doesn’t seem to know how to balance his chest voice with his head voice and falsetto. He also is really straining to hit the higher notes. Kelsea focused on giving very technical feedback, working with Wyatt to figure out where he can create his big moment. She also wanted to limit his runs so he stays true to the melody.
So after the second week of The Voice, Kelsea’s team now has Ayanna Joni, Ele Ivory, Lynnea Moorer, and Wyatt Rivers. So far, I’m liking Ele Ivory for the win. But we’ll see the last two competitors on “The Comeback Stage” next week! New episodes will post online this Monday and Tuesday.
