Netflix has announced the judges for its upcoming Star Search reboot. The show, which premieres on the streaming service on January 20, will feature a star-studded panel — including a familiar face for American Idol fans.
Netflix Announces New Star Search Judges
On Tuesday, Netflix shared a video on social media announcing the new Star Search judges — Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress Sarah Michelle Gellar, singer and rapper Jelly Roll, and model and cookbook author Chrissy Teigen.
“I know what it takes to have a career that slays,” Sarah Michelle Gellar says in the clip, “so my intentions as a judge will be constructive, but never cruel.”
Jelly Roll, who previously appeared as an Artist in Residence on American Idol, says he’s “searching for the brightest and most audacious stars on that stage.” Chrissy Teigen then shares that she knows “a legend when I see one,” playing on the name of her husband, John Legend.
It was previously announced that the show will be hosted by comedian Anthony Anderson. Viewers at home will be able to vote live for their favorite contestants with their TV remotes, or by touching the screen if watching on a mobile device.

When Does the New Show Premiere?
Star Search will premiere live on Netflix on Tuesday, January 20, at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT. New episodes will continue to premiere at that time on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Each episode will feature performers in various categories — from singing to stand-up comedy.
“The live voting feature is a total game-changer,” host Anthony Anderson shared. “Knowing that fans from all over the world can cast their votes in real time adds a whole new layer of excitement and participation to the mix. It’s like we’re all part of the show and get to be one of the judges.”
In case you didn’t know, Star Search was a talent competition show that first premiered in 1983 and went on to feature a number of celebrities before they were famous — including Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, and Adam Sandler. Netflix announced the reboot last year.
